PICK A FIGHT FRIDAYS: A STEVIE WONDER COVER VS. A BEATLES ORIGINAL
Despite a lifestyle upheaval consisting of no longer drinking my life away and doing everything in my power to turn the other cheek - I have to admit, it feels good to pick a fight every now and then. Just to be crystal clear, I always make sure that the possible candidate for a precise chop to the throat is a bona fide asshole mind you - but taking a respit from being a nice guy is the epitome of cathartic. And now I’m creating a similar scenario on this very blog.
Let me start off by saying that I’m a huge Beatles fan. Some of my earliest memories are of me listening to my sister’s Beatles records when she wasn’t home - going from getting lost in the melodies to sporadically checking the window to make sure that she hadn’t gotten home yet. So even though Stevie Wonder is one of my favorite artists, a man who I consider to be a bona fide genius - I have a healthy respect for the quartet who came straight outta Liverpool.
That said, and I know I’ll have a fight on my hands when I say this - Stevie Wonder’s rendition of The Beatles classic “We Can Work It Out” is so much superior than the original. The original is great, but Stevie truly makes the song his own - if you weren’t already accustomed to McCartney and Lennon’s wonderful writing, you may even think that it’s a different song altogether.
Yes, I know to many die hard Beatles fans what I just wrote is blasphemous. But then again, this is “Pick a Fight Friday”. Let’s do this motherfucker!
